The Awful Truth

The Awful Truth is the brainchild of Michael Moore, a "guerilla journalist" who gained famed by his first film, which was about General Motors, after it had closed down a factory in Detroit. It focused on the after-effect it had on a community that had literally grown up as a loyal appendage of the industrial giant, and then was cast aside as GM started to export its jobs, so that it could increase its profits. Moore conveniently pointed out that as thousands of auto workers were laid off permanently, the executives of General Motors were getting record-breaking salary bonuses. Always on the cutting edge of social issues, Michael Moore is an American original.

This website is the creation of R. Seth Friedman, third editor of FACTSHEET 5 magazine. This website is the perfect compliment to the print edition. It has very nice graphics, categories are easy to understand, and the reviews are timely. The magazine FACTSHEET 5 was founded in the early '80s by Mike Gunderloy, and it became the primary networking tool of the alternative press prior to the rise of the Internet. R. Seth Friedman, who took over as editor after the disastrous one issue editorship of Hudson Luce, is carrying on this tradition, on the Internet and in print. Indeed, this website is a useful tool for finding out more about the alternative press.

VH1 is the "other" music video cable-TV channel, the original music video channel being MTV. Of course, today there is little difference between them, as they are both owned by the same conglomerate, Viacom. Anyone who remembers MTV when it started can tell that it is not quite as music oriented as it used to be. Now MTV and VH-1 apologize when they have to interrupt commercials to play music videos!
